Stone Church to hold memorial service

Willow Glen’s Stone Church has planned a memorial for Brother Roger, the 90-year old monk who founded Taize. The memorial, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6:45 p.m. will be held at the church on 1108 Clark Way. Plans are for a simple service to talk about the man and to honor him.

Brother Roger founded the ecumenical Taize community in France in 1940, and it has been an ongoing resource for people all over the world to come for prayer and reflection. Brother Roger began the community as a sanctuary for Jews and later German POW ‘s. The community is committed to the reconciliation and unity of the various churches. About 5,000 people, many of them young people, visit the Taize Community in France each week.

The Stone Church Taize Service is modeled after the ecumenical service in Taize. The sanctuary is dimly lit and the sparkle of more than a hundred lighted candles reflects on the church’s stone walls. During the service, vocalist Barbara Roberts will be accompanied by pianist Karen Johnson and flutist Laraine Pitcher. There is an open invitation for church members and the community-at-large to come to sing, pray and enjoy the silence.

Stone Church provides Taize Services on the first Tuesday of each month throughout the year.  During Advent and Lent, Taize Services are held weekly.

Blood donors needed; drive scheduled for Sept. 9

We are now making appointments for the annual “Remember 9-11” Blood Drive, which is being held on Friday, Sept. 9, from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. at the EMQ Children & Family Service facility at 251 Llewellyn Ave. in Campbell.

The need is great, the demand for whole blood far outweighs the current supply. Right now, at any given time, only 24 hours worth of blood is available. An emergency would quickly deplete the supply. Your pint of blood would be such a help, and would be greatly appreciated.

To make an appointment, call Sue at (408) 517-4344 or sign up on the Internet at www.BeADonor.com. The pass code is SJRotary1. The appointments are scheduled every 15 minutes from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Call for your time slot now, while the schedule is wide open! Give a pint -help save a few lives!
