City Councilmember Chuck Reed, Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez, Greater Gardner Coalition Chair Kevin Christman and Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Harry Mavrogenes had shovels in hand at the groundbreaking ceremony for the newest park in San Jose. The nearly two-acre park is located on Fuller Avenue between Bird and Prevost in North Willow Glen. Neighbors have maintained the undeveloped site for many years.

The park is on city-owned property along the Caltrain railroad tracks and a portion of property owned by Caltrain. As vice-chair of Caltrain, Councilmember Yeager worked with their staff to obtain a long-term lease of the property.

As part of the Neighborhood Improvement Plan, the Greater Gardner Neighborhood identified and prioritized the project as number three on their top 10 priorities. The San Jose Redevelopment Agency is funding $746,000 to design and construct the project. The city of San Jose Department. of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services is managing the construction efforts.

The city plans to begin construction in early September and expects the park to be completed in February 2006. The park will feature landscaping, irrigation, a bocce court and a horseshoe pit. It is scheduled to open Spring 2006.

“Fuller Park will be a great amenity for the residents in this neighborhood of Willow Glen. This area is currently deficient in open space,” said Yeager.
