Baby killed at Almaden Road and Curtner
A memorial of flowers, balloons, candles and stuffed animals marks the spot where 13-month old Anthony Abreu was killed Friday, March 26 in a freak accident. Also injured was the child’s babysitter, Catherina Gassmann, who was hospitalized but released by the following Sunday. Police said a preliminary investigation shows a pickup truck and a Honda were driving north on Almaden Road while Gassmann was waiting with the stroller in the safety zone near the crosswalk at the southeastern corner of the intersection. The Honda suddenly swerved to the right and struck the victims from behind. The Honda continued north and struck a BMW and a Chevy Tahoe stopped in the westbound lanes of Curtner Avenue. The Honda then drove again into the intersection and struck the pickup. Both vehicles drove across the southbound lanes of Almaden Road and stopped about 100-feet from the intersection. Police are still trying to determine the cause of the collision. They do not believe alcohol played a part in the accident.
