Willow Glen High School $98 Club turns loss into a win for all
When the Measure-A tax initiative failed to pass last year, Willow Glen High School teachers and parents got creative. They took a disappointing defeat and turned it into gold for the Red and Gold, approximately $5,000 worth to date!
Many Willow Glen High parents are voluntarily taxing themselves to benefit their own students. These parents paid the $98 tax, which would have been assessed to their properties, directly to the Willow Glen Parents Club.
The Measure A tax initiative would have assessed a $98 per year property tax for five years. Willow Glen is inviting parents and community members to participate in their five-year plan to raise funds for teachers’ supplies and books. Unlike many tax measures where the funds are quickly absorbed by administration costs, the full amount of each $98 donation goes directly into the teachers’ classroom—no middle man or other group gets to use the fees.
Eric Stachnick presented this innovative plan to the Parents Club, which wholeheartedly supported the idea. At the meeting, one parent suggested they invite the community to join in support of the school through membership in the $98 Club. Area businesses, residents and Willow Glen alumni might want to contribute to the success of the students during this time of budget slashing and limited resources.
A special account exists to hold these funds until they are dispersed evenly to the teachers. This gift will allow teachers to purchase vital school supplies such as books, workbooks and other essential classroom items. Every dollar goes directly to Willow Glen High School teachers and students.
Whether community members voted for or against Measure-A, the $98 Club offers a chance to support Willow Glen High School students’ educational needs directly. Supporters can donate just one year or up to five full years. Checks may be made payable to the WGHS Parents Club and mailed to: Willow Glen High School Parents Club, 2001 Cottle Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125, and make it attention $98 Club.
