Library Friends announce spring book and bake sale

By Deborah Garvey
Special to the Times

The Friends of the Willow Glen Library will hold their spring book and bake sale on Saturday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Willow Glen Branch Library, located at 1157 Minnesota Avenue. Please note that sales are now starting one hour later - at 10 a.m. rather than 9 a.m. The delay results from system-wide changes in branch operating hours.

The Friends will be offering a varied selection of adult and children’s books, videos, DVDs, and CDs for sale. Shop for breezy spring reading favorites at very reasonable prices and enjoy tasty baked treats while supporting your local branch library! All sales proceeds benefit the Willow Glen Branch. Call (408) 998-2022 or visit www.sjlibrary.org for more information. To arrange for an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act, please call (408) 808-2397 or (408) 808-2130 (TDY) at least 48 hours prior to the event.

Last sale raised $3,700 for the library
Speaking of book sales, the Friends are happy to report that the final total revenues from the Jan. 31 book and bake sale were over $3,700, not $2,950 as erroneously reported in last month’s column. Many thanks to our generous volunteers and community members who help us support our local branch library through donations of time, books, baked goods, and purchases of books at our sales!

Children’s storyteller to feature tales of heros and ‘sheros’
The Friends are proud to sponsor a March special program for children. Erica Lann-Clark will present a storytelling concert, “The Hero’s Journey,” a series of stories for school age children, on Wednesday March 24, at 3:30 p.m. at the library. Erica asks the question: “What does it take to be a hero or a ‘shero?” In stories from around the world, boys and girls see how to become heroes and ‘sheroes’ by being willing to help others.

Erica has worked with the Monterey Bay Aquarium as their storyteller and has been featured at major storytelling festivals throughout California. She has entertained thousands of children in the United States and in foreign countries ranging from Canada to Singapore. Since 1993, Erica has hosted “The Storytellers” show on local radio station KKUP, 91.5 FM. We look forward to sharing a wonderful afternoon of stories with your children and Erica!

Willow Glen Book Club
Perhaps “hero stories” are not your cup of tea, but are you interested in joining a friendly, delightful community group that savors good literature and fine pastries? The Willow Glen Book Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at Le Boulanger Restaurant, 1351 Lincoln Avenue. The group will next meet on Wednesday, March 10 at 11:45 a.m. to discuss “Seabiscuit.” A schedule of books and future meeting dates is posted at www.sjlibrary.org or call the library for more information.

Senior program on selling your home
The library is also pleased to announce a special program for adults 55 and older who are contemplating selling their homes. On Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. the library will host “How Can I Transfer My Property Tax Base to a New Home? To My Children?” a discussion of the property tax implications of selling a home. Nick and Barbara Lymberis of Prudential California Realty will discuss property tax exemptions created by Propositions 58, 60 and 90.

The Willow Glen Branch Library, located at 1157 Minnesota Avenue is open Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sunday. You can reach the library by calling 988-2022 or the recording at 988-2053 or access the main library’s Web page at www.sjlibrary.org/ and go to the Willow Glen Branch through the links on the bottom of the home page.
