Vandalism/ Gang activity
300 block of Willow Street
The victim’s residence was tagged by rival gang members, who also threatened future violence. This is ongoing from a previous incident at the residence and an assault with a deadly weapon.

Bomb technician call out
1200 block of Willow Mar Drive
An elderly resident called police in regards to approximately 25 pounds of black powder that she wanted to dispose of. The Bomb Unit responded to secure the powder, which was packed inside of several containers.

Coroner’s case
1400 block of Willowmont Avenue
The 72 year-old female was discovered by her husband. San Jose Fire responded and pronounced the victim deceased. She had numerous medical conditions. The death appeared natural.

Avoid the 13 Program final results
The countywide “Avoid the 13” program concluded at midnight Jan. 3 with successful results for the San Jose Police Department. The program, which lasted 22 days, began Dec. 12, 2003 with a final night of enforcement on Jan. 2, 2004. Patrol officers and DUI paycars initiated 326 DUI arrests. This was an 11 percent increase over last year’s total of 291. In the city of San Jose, there were 16 DUI related injury collisions and no DUI related fatalities this year. Countywide, arrests were also up from the previous year. The 15 agencies making up Santa Clara County’s “Avoid the 13” program made arrests totaling 860, up 6 percent from last year’s total of 805 arrests.

Armed robbery
Branham Lane near Light Rail Station
Two male juvenile victims flagged down SJPD to report being approached and robbed at knifepoint by two Hispanic male adults. The suspects walked away into the neighborhood telling the victims to stay where they were for five minutes before leaving. By the time they reported the incident to the police more than 10 minutes had passed. Units circulated the area but no suspects were found.

Burglary
800 block of Wren Drive
Officers from districts Tom and Adam responded to Canoas Elementary School to investigate a burglary that had just occurred. The reporting party saw two suspects flee from the scene. Responding officers developed information leading to two different residences in the neighborhood and made five arrests: two adult males and two juvenile males for burglary and one juvenile male for giving false information to the police. The adults were booked and the juveniles were cited and released.

Deceased person
2300 block of Fairgrove Court
A roommate discovered the 63-year-old male, unresponsive; San Jose Fire responded and determined the subject deceased. The deceased passed away in his sleep and it appeared natural. He had a history of coronary problems and was under a doctor’s care.

Possession of a firearm while under the influence
Old Hillsdale/Pearl
An officer was attempting to initiate a car stop and saw a firearm discarded from the vehicle. He initiated a high-risk stop calling for units. An occupant of the vehicle fled on foot from the vehicle. The female driver and male passenger were taken into custody with the vehicle. A perimeter was set and an area search was conducted. One male suspect is still at large with possible leads to his identity. The discarded rifle was located and booked. There were approximately 24 police units involved including K9 units. The male passenger was charged with felony possession of a loaded firearm—and possession of a loaded firearm. The female driver was charged with driver permitting a loaded firearm in vehicle—which is a misdemeanor.

Felony Hit and Run
Branham Lane/Heppner Lane
The Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) along with district Tom and Adam units responded to a felony hit and run at Branham Lane and Heppner Lane. Vehicle #1 was eastbound on Branham when driver #1 lost control, colliding with a city light pole and a second vehicle. The suspect driver abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot into the Tanglewood Townhouse complex. Upon the officer’s arrival, he determined (through police communications) that vehicle #1 was reported stolen. While TEU investigated the collision, beat units flooded the area in an attempt to locate the suspect. The suspect was not located but it was learned that the property inside the vehicle was taken during previous auto burglaries.

Robbery
2000 block of Camden Avenue-Albertsons
An adult male was seen exiting the store without paying for two 30 packs of beer. When employees confronted him at his vehicle the suspect drove directly at them to escape. They obtained his license plate. District T Units located and arrested him at his residence nearby and the property was recovered.

Deceased person
2900 block of Jessie Court
An employee of the residential care facility discovered the 83-year-old male, unresponsive, in his bedroom. SJ Fire responded and attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate the victim. He was pronounced deceased. Death was natural

Major injury vehicle accident
Branham Lane East/Collom
A17-year-old passenger was driving with his mother. The male juvenile became upset and jumped out of the van while the vehicle was traveling westbound on Branham Lane. He suffered major head injuries. He was taken to San Jose Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Night burglary
2200 block of Plummer Avenue-Presentation High School
During the night hours, an unknown suspect entered the campus computer trailer by force, cutting locks and removed computer components and parts. The suspect loaded property into a golf cart type service vehicle belonging to the school and left the school undetected.

Hostage barricade
2700 block of Joseph
NCI officers conducted a stake out for a parolee at large. Upon attempting to take him into custody the suspect fled into his apartment and armed himself with a knife. Patrol officers established a perimeter. The other occupants of the residence were released and the suspect was subsequently arrested without injury.

Assault with a deadly weapon / parole violation
2700 block of Joseph Avenue
NCI officers attempted to take a suspect into custody for a parole violation. The suspect armed himself and threatened the officers with two large knives. Patrol officers responded to assist. An NCI officer established a rapport with the suspect and began negotiations. MERGE responded and was about to take over the situation when the officer talked the suspect into surrendering. The suspect was booked.

Injury accident-vehicle rollover
1100 block of Willow Street
A van with six family members was eastbound on Willow when the driver struck a parked vehicle. The vehicle rolled over, ejecting a 1 year-old child. The passengers and driver were taken to VMC and treated for minor scrapes and cuts and released a short time later. The driver was cited for driving without a license.

Found Juveniles
1200 block of Curtner Avenue
Officers responded to the residence when the mother called police and advised that the three juveniles had returned. All were under the influence of “Coricidin,” an over- the-counter cold medication now popular with juveniles. The symptoms are body tremors, nervousness, hallucinations and extreme mood swings. All three were transported to VMC for medical attention. Two juveniles went to EPS and one went to Juvenile Hall on an outstanding warrant.

Commercial burglary
4100 block of Jacksol Drive
Officers responded to an alarm at a school office facility and found nothing. However, entry had been made via an unlocked window to a small office area that was not alarmed. A P.A. system and microphone were taken.

Vehicle accident
Lincoln Avenue / Minnesota Avenue
Officers were westbound on Minnesota Avenue near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue in the number 1 lane when a vehicle turned from the number 2 lane into their lane and struck the front of their patrol car. Both officers sustained minor injuries to extremities and will seek medical treatment from their doctors.

1000 block of Laurie Avenue
